How does HubPages make money?
HubPages makes money by sharing ads revenue with writers. The platform receives money when a reader clicks on the online ads displayed on HubPages articles.
If the HubPages member joins the Earnings Program, he/she gets a share of the ads revenue.
How to make money on HubPages
To make money on HubPages, you can join HubPages Earnings Program. The program includes the Ad Program and the Amazon Program.
You need a Paypal account to join HubPages Earnings Program.
The Ad Program
HubPages Ad Program includes Google Adsense and its Ad Program.
HubPages partners with Google Adsense and other premium ad sources. According to HubPages, with the size of the platform, they can secure large website ad rates for publishers.
You need to have your own Google Adsense account. You are paid directly through your Adsense account.
The Ad Program is the main money-making source for Hubpages publishers.
The 60/40 split
HubPages takes 40% of your Google Adsense impressions. This is not the same as 40% of the revenue generated.
The 60/40 split refers to the time the Google Adsense code displayed.
It means for every 100 times your page is viewed, 40 of them will display HubPages’ Google Adsense code, while the remaining 60% of them will be displaying your Google Adsense code.
Your earnings depend on if readers click on ads when your Google Adsense code is displayed.
The Amazon Program
You can participate in the Amazon Program under HubPages. With the Amazon Affiliate Program, you earn a commission from Amazon Product sale by displaying it in your article.
The program tracks referrals from your articles and the resulting purchase activity on Amazon. Your earnings reports and payments are provided by HubPages rather than Amazon.
The commission earned from Amazon product sales is shared between HubPages and you.
Bonus Earnings – Contest Winnings
You may also participate in the HubPages contest. The winner of the contest will be rewarded with a cash prize.
Why HubPages?
For writers who do not want the hassle of starting his/her own blog or website. HubPages is the easy way out. You can start writing immediately after signing up for a free account with HubPages.
With the revenue sharing model, regular publishers share the advertising revenue with HubPages. In other words, you are making money from your writing.
HubPages vs Medium
Both HubPages and Medium are free blogging platforms, however, there is a big difference in the monetization methods.
HubPages runs the Revenue Sharing model. It shares ads revenue with writers. After the writer publishes an article, HubPages places ads onto them automatically. When the ads are clicked by readers then HubPages gives the writer a share of any revenue generated.
HubPages does not allow external affiliate links.
Medium is a membership subscription service. It makes money by charging readers a monthly subscription fee.
Writers are paid based on the stories’ read time. The longer the Medium members read your stories, the more you will earn. The money paid to the writers is from a portion of paid readers’ subscription fees.
With a proper disclaimer, Medium allows external affiliate links. You can find out more in my How To Make Money on Medium article.
Which platform offers a better deal for writers?
I prefer Medium.
With HubPages, Ad revenue is shared between HubPages and the writer. It is fair but ad revenue could be small. You need to find a decent category and write regularly to see any meaningful earning.
With Medium, you focus on producing high quality, engaging content. The content that catches the attention of readers. The longer they read your stories, the more you will earn.
How to Make Money on HubPages – Closing word
Can you make money writing on HubPages? Yes. HubPages is a legit blogging platform. And it is free to join HubPages and start writing on the platform.
Do I recommend using HubPages to make money online? Probably not. HubPages is an awesome platform for writers, but not so much for those who are looking to make money online.
According to HubPages, most writers in the HubPages earnings program, even the very talented and active ones, do not see significant earnings (or even make their first payout) for at least six months.
Besides, all revenues your articles generate are shared between you and HubPages.
HubPages vs Own Blog
Six months might not sound like a long time. But, with proper training and guidance, you can build your own blog and start making money in six months as well.
The main advantage of having a blog is, you have full control of your content and earning. Keep in mind that HubPages shares ads revenue with writers. The earning potential for your hard work is not fully realized.
Another main advantage of having a blog is the ability to make money via affiliate marketing.
Affiliate Marketing is my recommended monetization method for blogs. There are endless opportunities. To find out how I make money online, make sure to check out my articles How Do I Make Money Online.
